CSSD Perspective | What Management Approaches Should the CSSD Adopt for Reusable Medical Instruments, Devices, and Supplies?
Posted by Admin | 17 Mar
1. What is the Central Sterile Supply Department?
The Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD) is the unit within a hospital responsible for the cleaning, disinfection, sterilization, and supply of sterile items for all reusable medical instruments, devices, and materials used across departments.
2. What is centralized management of CSSD?
Centralized management of CSSD refers to a management model in which reusable medical instruments, devices, and items are collected and processed centrally within the CSSD for cleaning, disinfection, or sterilization.
In cases where hospitals are geographically dispersed, have multiple CSSDs, or have limited CSSD space with cleaning areas located in operating rooms, the cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization processes are still uniformly managed by CSSD in accordance with relevant standards, which is also considered centralized management.
3. What is reprocessing?
Reprocessing refers to the validated process applied to used or contaminated medical devices that are intended for subsequent single use. These processes typically include cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization.
4. What management approach should CSSD adopt for reusable medical devices and items?
CSSD should adopt a centralized management approach, taking responsibility for the collection, cleaning, disinfection, sterilization, and distribution of all reusable medical instruments, devices, and items that require reprocessing before reuse.
5. Should flexible endoscopes and dental instruments be centrally managed?
The cleaning and disinfection of flexible endoscopes and dental instruments may be performed in accordance with national standards, or they may also be centrally handled by CSSD for cleaning, disinfection, and/or sterilization.
6. Should neonatal feeding bottles and nipples be managed by CSSD?
CSSD is designed to process reusable medical instruments and items to ensure they meet sterile and safety standards, with workflows and environments tailored to medical-related items.
Feeding bottles and nipples, however, are infant care products with specific cleaning and disinfection requirements. Therefore, centralized management by CSSD is not recommended.
7. What responsibilities should the responsible department of CSSD fulfill?
- Collaborate with relevant departments to formulate and implement plans for CSSD centralized management, and address issues during implementation.
- Work with human resources to allocate staff based on workload.
- Manage the quality of cleaning, disinfection, packaging, and sterilization processes, establish quality indicators, and conduct inspections and evaluations.
- Establish and implement training systems for CSSD personnel, incorporating professional knowledge, infection prevention and control, and relevant laws and regulations into continuing education programs.
8. What responsibilities should other related departments fulfill?
Departments such as nursing management, infection control, equipment, and logistics should fulfill the following responsibilities:
Key responsibilities
- Provide guidance and supervision on CSSD cleaning, disinfection, sterilization, and quality monitoring, with regular evaluations.
- In cases of suspected device-related healthcare-associated infections, organize investigations and propose corrective measures.
- Review hygiene aspects of CSSD construction or renovation plans and provide recommendations on equipment configuration and performance.
- Equipment departments should review procurement (certificates and technical parameters), establish installation and maintenance quality control systems, and maintain equipment records.
- Logistics departments should ensure the supply and quality of water, electricity, compressed air, and steam, and conduct regular maintenance of facilities and pipelines.
- Equipment and logistics departments should regularly calibrate instruments such as pressure gauges and thermometers, with proper documentation.
Other departments such as materials supply, education, and research should fulfill their responsibilities under coordination to ensure the effective operation of CSSD.
